Hi, we’re the Glendenning family — a family of five with a huge love of travel, adventure and discovering special places together.
The Barn Oakenshaw was our family home long before it ever became somewhere guests could stay. Over many years, we poured our hearts and souls into creating this unique place, continually developing and investing in the house and its surroundings for our own family to enjoy.
It was never designed as a holiday complex. The beautiful living spaces, gardens, hot tubs, entertainment areas, cinema-style TVs, games areas and children’s play park are here because we created them for ourselves. It’s a real family home that has evolved over many years, and we think that’s a big part of what makes it so different.
In truth, The Estate would never normally have become available for guests to stay in.
It was only when our love of travel took us on our biggest adventure yet and we made the decision to leave the UK and experience family life overseas that we decided to open up our much-loved home for others to enjoy.
Although we may now be thousands of miles away, The Barn Oakenshaw remains incredibly special to us. We’re still personally involved, continually investing in and improving the estate alongside our trusted local team.
And one of the things I love most is hearing from our guests and seeing their photographs — children enjoying the park, families around the table, friends celebrating and people simply enjoying the house and beautiful surroundings.
There’s something very special about seeing other people making memories in a place where we made so many of our own.
Our travels have taught us that the places you remember most aren’t always the conventional ones — they’re the places with character, personality and something a little different about them.

Each of our properties combines its own character with thoughtful design, modern comforts and plenty of space to relax. From smaller family escapes to large group stays and special celebrations, we want every visit to feel private, comfortable and memorable.
Set across our peaceful 6-acre estate in County Durham, The Barn Oakenshaw offers the freedom of a countryside escape while remaining within easy reach of Durham and some of the North East’s best attractions.
